How do you clean artificial grass?

For the cleaning of artificial grass we are going to break this activity down into several alternatives.

Watering: Watering synthetic turf as a cleaning method is very effective in removing accumulated dust.

This activity should be done at least twice a month.

Watering the grass pavement will help decrease the static that dust produces when it accumulates on the fibers and the shoes or slippers rub against it.

If the garden is located in an area adjacent to the field and with surrounding buildings, the frequency of watering may need to be higher.

Which cleaning product to use for artificial grass?

Using cleaning products to remove stains and odours is possible when it comes to cleaning artificial turf.

Removing a stain of urine or pet feces as well as remains of sauces or drinks such as wine is possible with this method.

You can use a neutral soap or even bleach and then rinse with plenty of water.

Under no circumstances should you use abrasive or solvent-based cleaning products. This greatly affects the dyeing and protection of the grass fibres.

In our shop we have a sanitizing perfume specially developed for cleaning synthetic turf.

The sanitizing perfume keeps the grass clean from mites and dirt while providing a fresh and pleasant smell.

What is the best machine for cleaning artificial grass?

There are several types of machines for cleaning and maintaining artificial grass for gardens.

What we see as the most up-to-date for this type of application is the comber 502e that it is an electric machine with a brush and an integrated collection bag.

Then there are other options such as blowing machines, electric or gasoline powered brushes where brushing and collection would be done separately.

Which brush should I use to clean the artificial grass?

When it comes to manual brushes for combing and cleaning artificial grass, we recommend brushes for sweeping public areas.

These brushes must have long, sturdy, semi-rigid bristles in order to fulfil their 2 main functions.

The function of cleaning with this type of brush to sweep leaves and other similar debris is very simple, just pass it without making pressure on the surface.

To "comb" the lawn, it is necessary to tilt the brush at about 30° and pass it over with a little pressure on the lawn.

This brushing should be done in the opposite direction to where the grass fibres are pointing.

Can you vacuum the artificial grass?

Vacuuming artificial turf is feasible as long as it is not a model of older generations that has been weighted down with silica sand.

The vacuum cleaner could suck up this sand and leave the pavement without this ballast.

However, depending on the type of lawn and the amount of sand that has been ballasted per square meter, it can be tested with the vacuum cleaner at half power and using the same brush as the vacuum cleaner.

The use of the vacuum cleaner is recommended for cleaning artificial grass from dirt in the form of small particles that become encrusted and are difficult to clean with other methods.

For example, the remains of the small leaves of pines and other similar trees.

How to remove weeds from artificial grass?

It is likely that in the spring and autumn season, annoying weeds can germinate on our artificial grass.

You can remove them by pulling them out and then applying a herbicide to keep them in line.

We recommend you read our article that talks in more detail about The most important thing you should know about weeds and how to treat them.

What care and warnings should be taken to preserve artificial turf for a longer period of time?

It is important to take care that abrasive materials do not come into contact with the grass. Liquids with solvents as well as gasoline or kerosene fuels etc.

Avoid leaving elements on the surface of the lawn that could cause a magnifying glass effect and the consequent melting of the lawn fibres:

  • Glass cups as well as glass coffee or side tables.
  • Aluminium or other metal tubes.
  • Clothing such as watches, metal bracelets, eyeglasses, etc.
  • Metal tools, aluminium ladders?
  • Trunks, booths or metal weapons.
  • Aluminum or stainless steel furniture with chrome or gloss finishes.
  • In short, anything that with direct sunlight at high temperatures can melt the fibers of the grass.

On the other hand, if you are going to use hydrojet-type pressure washers for artificial turf maintenance, you must be careful not to directly apply the high pressures as well as the high temperatures of some of these machines, which can cause severe damage to the artificial turf.
