For the installation of artificial grass around swimming pools take note of the following tips:

Preparation of the ground

The pools with artificial grass Like the other surfaces, they require planning for their placement.

Building a garden with all its elements involves a procedure to obtain good results.

The first thing is to prepare the land by cleaning up the soil surface, removing the existing natural grass layer, weeds, stubble and weeds in general.

This task must leave a surface with a height that is lower than the level we want to reach on the lawn.

This lower height should contain the subsequent input of gravel and grass in relation to this level we want to achieve. For example: achieve the same level as the top of the pool.

Placement of anti-herb mesh.

"Protect" with a net anti-herb geotextile.

This material can be optional and can be placed directly on the ground. Some choose to place it on the gravel sub-base.

You can choose between woven or non-woven meshes.

Keep in mind that the greater the density of the tissue, the less drainage capacity the system will have. In the case of placing the mesh, we recommend medium densities.

Preparation of the sub-base

Make a base of gravel or sapphire at least 5 centimetres thick.

You can also choose from other types of aggregates depending on the location you are in and that have good drainage.

You can choose a type of medium grain aggregate or the combination of 2 that go from coarse to fine.

Leveling and compaction

Level and compact the base you have prepared. You can use metal rollers, water rollers or compacting machinery.

About this activity we recommend read our article who speaks more extensively on this point.

In terms of levelling, the ground must be even without pronounced undulations.

If the surface has small drops with one or more slopes, better, this will help drain and evacuate the water faster.

Laying the grass strips

Try to position the direction of the cloths or grass strips in the same direction.

When the pool is involved in laying the grass strips, the approach may require making decisions outside of the standard.

Trying to waste as little grass as possible may lead you to make the decision to place some strips in another direction.

This placement is usually more viable in grass models with greater height and medium or medium-high densities.

Cutting and adjustment of the pavement

Cut and adjust the carpet to the shapes of the garden and pool. With the help of a cutter, a meter and a line marker, the necessary cuts can be made to leave the flooring tight.

If the garden or terrace has very contoured shapes, we recommend hiring the services of a specialized company since it requires a more technical skill.

Recommendations for placement on concrete

In the case of concrete, tile or cement floors, use a drainage mesh. This recommendation is optional.

If the garden or terrace is not waterproofed, you can dispense with the mesh and use the drops to one or more slopes.

You can review this point further in our article on terraced lawns.

Joining the artificial turf strips

Attach the connecting strip and glue with special artificial turf glue. The bonding strip must be dry and free of any other materials.

The glue must be prepared at the time of the impregnation of the joint strips.

It is advisable to have all the joint tapes already cut and put on before starting with the glue.

In the event of wind, they can be fixed momentarily with staples or left covered with the same grass and uncovered when gluing.

Ballasting and brushing of artificial grass

We recommend ballasting with silica sand in 3,4,5,6,10,15,20 kgs depending on the height and characteristics of the synthetic turf.

On most models of textured artificial grass for gardens and terraces, ballasting with silica sand is optional and it is less and less visible given the advances seen in today's types of grass.

Brushing can be done with manual sweepers or better if motorized sweepers are available.

Other recommendations

If you have recently built the pool with the corresponding excavation of the ground, you should take the following into account before laying the artificial grass:

  1. Instruct the company building your pool to refill the edges of the pool with well compacted sand and gravel, using a compacting rammer if possible. Otherwise, it is very likely that in a short time the ground will suffer with the first rains and it could be noticed how it is undermined in this area.
  2. Value the option of making a concrete floor in the rest of the space if the garden is not too big and you have a budget to make them. At ALLGrass Solutions we now provide minor construction services with construction of sills of concrete at very competitive prices.

Remember, from our headquarters in Madrid, we serve all of Europe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does pool chlorine damage artificial turf?

NOT. The fibres of this flooring have been treated and protected for these products. Chlorine and other chemicals in the pool do not affect the lawn.

Does salt from saltwater pools damage artificial turf?

NO. The high quality models have resistant and durable fibers to live in the garden or terrace with this type of pool.

Artificial turf It is NOT affected by saltpetre and its fibres are NOT discoloured during the lifetime of the pavement.

How is the lawn drained by the overflow of water from the pools?

One of the main advantages of synthetic turf is its high drainage capacity.

Overflowing water from the pool or shower will not flood this surface as long as it is properly installed.

Is it possible to place removable pools on artificial turf?

Totally! The great recovery capacity that many of our models have makes this possible.

The memory effect of artificial grass allows the surface to be restored to its pre-assembled state and to be even again within a few hours.

You can help speed up this process by brushing the surface.

We advise you to read the article about the Bermuda model that has evolved into the Magnum Living Garden.

Does artificial turf slip with pool water?

Another great feature of synthetic grass is its ability to adhere.

It is likely to slip, but compared to other surfaces such as decks and tiles, these chances are lower.

Can the grass burn when you go barefoot?

The grass gains and loses heat fast.

Going barefoot on the grass in temperatures above 30º generates intense heat but does not burn.

Conclusions

Select a quality artificial turf that has the characteristics to live with the use of the pool.

Make sure the soil where the lawn will be placed is properly stabilized and well-drained.

Plan to lay the strips of grass in the same direction if possible and in the widest possible widths. If possible, it is recommended to use grass with heights greater than 40mm.
